Do you have a hematologist?

A friend who went through cancer treatments before me asked what my hematologist has said. I don't have one and haven't heard anyone of my doctors suggest it. Is this a common thing?

Mine was part of the oncology group I went to. That basically is your blood report that you get each time. How your blood is analyzed and how your stats are.0

A hematologist specializes in diseases of the blood so they normally treat blood cancers like leukemia. But as clinda mentioned, there may be a hematologist on staff who would look at your blood work results.0

I don't have a hematologist. I guess I have never needed one. Thankfully.0

My medical oncologist's specialty is hematology. It makes sense to me since so many cancers are cancers of the blood.0

I have found that most Oncologists are Hematologists. Ask your Dr.0

I didn’t have one, only a breast surgeon and breast oncologist (or maybe she’s just an oncologist).0

Without a brilliant, aggressive, relentless, creative, world-class and otherwise amazing hematologist, I would have departed planet earth in 2008.0

I did not have a hematologist. I know that there was one attached to the chemo center, because there were people that just got blood. I never had any need for that service, thank goodness.0

As far as I know, I've never specifically had one. There may have been one on my team at the center though.0

My oncologist is also a hematologist.0

My chemo guy is affiliated with an oncology/hematology practice. I think that is true of a lot of oncologists who specialize in the chemo side of treatment.0

I don't have one--unlike many oncs, my MO is not a heme-onc. But she says I'm not anywhere anemic enough to need a hematologist. I didn't have chemo, so maybe that's a factor too.0

Like some of you my oncologist is also a hematologist. I was going to the blood clinic for my Warfarin checks. The techs just couldn't get it right, so my oncologist took over. Everything is fine now & cardiologist is happy, too. They are in the same building. I also get my blood test for my PCP drawn at Cancer center. It saves me from going to another lab & it can be drawn from my port. I just have to stay on top of it to make sure DOs are in the system. It's a win-win for everyone.0
