Why are you in hospice? I’m only familiar with that service here when patients are expected to pass within a month and have chosen to forgo any medical care.
As explained to me by a palliative care nurse, hospice’s focus is on providing comfort but, they don’t do anything to prolong life. Are you sure you aren’t a palliative care patient which does provide comfort meds for patients who have no more curative options but, aren’t at the end of life? I read your patient profile/journey which sounds awful. What type doctor is handling your care since diagnosis because by the sounds of it, you need much better care.

My friend used canabis while he was in hospice care. It helped him a lot.

Are you within a hospice facility or a hospice at home? Do you have a caretaker or advocate helping you with this situation? I would suggest having a conversation with the nurse who checks in. Patients in this condition are given a wide-range of pain relievers and usually by a month should not be having pain at all. In fact a big majority of patients with that length of time in hospice are comatose due to their pain relievers.

My MIL was given plenty of pain meds while on hospice at home. Her comfort was their biggest concern with two types of cancer. She often chose not to take them because she didn't like the way they made her feel(sleepy). The nurses coordinated beautifully with her oncologist to make sure she had every thing she needed.

I am on hospice at home and my daughter stays and helps me out. I was put on hospice because i am stage 4 and all options have been used . i have been fighting this for almost 5 years now. hospice here is 6 months or less to live..i a on 200 fentyl patch every 2 days , 90 mg oxycodone, .every 4 hours and .5 morphine every 2 hour and daily Ativan ,muscle relaxers, lyrica along with all the other daily meds .And yes i was on palliative care before hospice. Just cant get relief. cancer is in bones. nodes and pleura also. my oncologist pretty much wrote me off he is more about quality than quantity. Me..i am for every minute i can have with my kids.

@ Darlenem Yes hospice is 6 months here too and sometimes longer. I'm in NJ. You are on a lot of medications but if they're not working, maybe you've developed a tolerance for one or more? Maybe time to try something else? My husband can't take morphine since it makes him antsy like too much caffeine. Percocet did nothing even if he overlapped the dosages. Dilaudid (hydromorphone) is the only thing that works for him and we keep it in the house. He also takes a muscle relaxant and low dose amitriptyline for neuropathy. I wonder if there is something they can administer like a nerve block? Also a pharmacist might be able to tell you if one of your meds is counteracting another and making it less potent. I hope you can find a good cocktail that will help your pain and still give you the time with your children that you want.

Darlenem, I re-read all your posts on your current situation and am wondering 1) what treatment were you offered when cancer spread and 2) who decides when to throw in the towel as you said your doctor believes in “quality over quantity”??
