I recently went to the ER for chest pain. It was a bad case of heartburn and I was given a GI cocktail with a twist of Novocain. Ironically, they made me stay overnight because women have different symptoms. They did have an urgent care center, too, but want calls beforehand for separating COVID-19 from non-COVID-19 patients. I was taken immediately into the hospital. The cost for a one night stay of observation is drastically cheaper than a full blown emergency.
I had high blood pressure from the stress (wonder why?).

For me, it is pretty much a no-brainer. I have to pay $500 just to walk into the ER. If they have to admit me, it goes towards that bill, but otherwise, the hospital keeps it and still charges for the ER visit. So, I wait until the urgent care opens. As with so many things these days, the abuse of use of things makes the rest of us pay the price.

Always urgent care. I've been going to mine long enough to trust they will triage and let me know if I need ER. Twice they have phoned the hospital and I got admitted directly so avoided the ER bill completely.
