Doctor's Note: Can you boost your immune system?
A doctor explains how our immune systems work and what we can do to help them function normally.

In the current climate, health is on everyone's minds and we are all thinking "How can I avoid catching the coronavirus?"

We are washing our hands incessantly, standing two metres away from each other and running a mile when someone coughs.

But many of my patients are asking me whether there is a way to boost their immune systems to help protect them.

The short answer is no. No amount of kale or flaxseed will stop you from catching this contagious and serious viral infection. Hand washing, social distancing and self-isolation remain the only current ways we have to actively prevent it.

Exactly. We can keep what we have functioning as well as possible, but those who sell "immune boosters" or similar are basically robbing you of cash.

I boosted my immune system - but only by having it killed and replaced with the hyper-vigilant immune system of a donor. That can come at great cost. We transplant a monster into us to fight the beast - but then we must tame the monster. Not a cut and dry proposition.

Staying active and eating a balanced diet is about all that we can do to stay healthy. There are always scammers who want to rob us of our money. So we have be vigilant of false claims.

Immunity is not only about not catching viruses but also about fighting them once they invade the body. I agree with Jane that staying active and eating a balanced diet helps keep out immune system healthy. Avoiding stress also helps. There are also autoimmune diseases that destroy the immune system. There is now magic pill for these. The best we humans can so is respect our bodies and listen to our Dr.s. And in my opinion that's a tall order
