After dealing with cancer for this long I have a hard time relaxing and de-stressing

When I go home and my dog jumps up in my lap all of that seems to melt away. I'm starting to think that there is something to this "therapy dog" thing. Does anyone else find this is true for them? I used to think it was all a crock and just a way for people to get their animals on the plane.

I was doing fairly well dealing with stress and anxiety - I thought. In late November my cat was hit in the road and killed. Since then I feel I am regressing. I am not sleeping well and I am taking much more anti-anxiety medication. YES! Animals are very therapeutic. Do people abuse the whole "therapy dog" thing? Absolutely!!!! It's amazing what some people try to pass off as "therapy animals " but, for people with cancer, they can be a huge comfort, a distraction and a connection with reality. While I was going through treatments I had a horse and a pony to care for everyday. They kept me going! So hug your dog!

11 years ago our Sheltie was a puppy going on 1 year old and was always in my face or laying beside me. They are definitely therapy for me. Now we have a new puppy and I'm sure he will be of help as I recuperate on the couch.

My cat, Misty, climbs in my lap while I watch TV or read. There is nothing like the unconditional love of a critter.

Oh, Bengal. I'm sorry about your kitty. I lost the kitty who tried to groom my mostly bald head about 2 years after I completed treatment. And the other one died of old age about 9 months later. And then I was the longest I'd been without a cat since I moved into my first apartment by myself. Lost the last one the Monday before Thanksgiving 2015, and I was catless for about 5 weeks. Went and found myself a new buddy the day after Christmas that year. I was a LONG 5 weeks. She likes to be in the same room as me. Doesn't have to be on me, but close by. She'll nap on the ottoman next to my feet. Or the bottom of my bed. Or the bedroom floor. And it's been a long time since I've gone to the bathroom by myself... Gotta love our furry children!

I believe pets can bring a lot of comfort and companionship. And I certainly believe they help with stress and anxiety. I'm have been without a pet for almost 3 years and now that I have my own place I can't really afford to get another one. So, I make sure I make friends with the neighbors pets and I visit the local humane society.
