Strawberry question

It’s strawberry season where I live. I have an Ostomy bag from my ilostomy surgery. Are those things on the outside considered seeds? Should I peel that off before eating? Crazy question I know.

It's Not a crazy question at all. WE have a few people here with ostomy bags, they will be by soon to give you their experiences.

they are seeds. I eat them (strawberries) (but have a colostomy). If you do not have diverticulitis and wait 4 - 6 weeks after surgery, you should be ok.... Try one and chew it thoroughly.

I also have a colostomy. But I eat seeds. I know it might be different with the ilostomy because I have the majority of my colon. I was fortunate enough to have a dietician and naturalopathic doctor at CTCA who helped me understand the nutritional part. Maybe your oncologist could refer you to s dietician or nutritionist.

I have a colostomy and can eat strawberries just fine. With an ileostomy, you have to be a little bit more careful. I'd start off by eating just a couple and see how you do. And build up - like LoriK said, be sure to chew thoroughly.

What you need to avoid is foods that are stringy, like coconut and asparagus, and foods with tough skins like apples and cucumbers. These can clump up and cause a blockage which might require a trip to the ER - during the COVID-19 crisis, you want to avoid that. So just take it easy.

Here is the link to a really good chart from Memorial Sloan Kettering:
