A cancer diagnosis is at first shocking, and later that shock evolves into something more nuanced. How has your life changed since diagnosis- personally, physically, professionally, mentally, spiritually?

My life has changed most profoundly because I know "life will go on." I try not to get blocked by things. Every time I hear that someone has heard "cancer" for the first time as it relates to them personally, I know that there is a level of fear and apprehension. I know that there will never be a time they can unhear that word. I know there will never be a day that the word is NOT a part of their life. Ever again. It is a part of their lives, those they love, and those who love them. A bell that can never be "un-rung."

I try to help people process the news, and I let them know about this site because there are so many resources here, so many people who have fought a fight or know something about it.

I have learned NOT to say "Be positive" or "It's all going to be okay." I have learned that I had better do it if I tell someone I will come alongside. Don't disappoint people when they need you. Be true to your word.

I have also learned that people will tell you they care and show you something different. Yet I strive to be kinder and better. I lost my faith in some people, and came to see that I had so much in common with others that I would have never known if not for this site.

There is a bond among people who have had cancer, lived with cancer, cared for someone with cancer. It changes lives.
