I believe early detection was a huge key in my diagnosis. I feel certain it saved my life, even if not just because of the cancer itself. Mine diagnosis in late 2019 was for Stage 0 DCIS- tiny little abnormalities on my mammogram that looked like pepper flakes of grains of salt. So small, and definitely nothing I would have detected through a self-exam. I had skipped two years of mammograms because life just got busy. My PCM was adamant that I go get my mammo that very day of my regular check up. I had NEVER been called back for a follow-up before, but this time things were different.

I had my lumpectomy and subsequently a mastectomy in late January/early February 2020 just before the world shut down for COVID. As a result of my recovery, I was very mindful of not keeping my immune system uncompromised. I was very cautious of where I went and what I did. I started eating better and taking better care of myself to try to minimize any other difficulties I might have.

I do know that a disproportionate number of racial/ethnic groups and other underserved communities do have trouble getting screened and lack resources. I am always mindful to tell people if there are free or low-cost screenings that they can utilize. I am always looking for ways to help people with early screening so they have the best chance possible to survive and thrive.
