Hi Rick, I was told here in Madisonville they just lined everyone up one day a month and just freeze everyones prostate and not to read anything about it on the internet. That made me want a second opinion and my family doctor made the appointment at Vanderbilt for me. it is only 110 miles from me and not a bad drive. I go back on july 12th for my first checkup and then not for 5 months at which time they will check my psa. So I wont know how well it worked until then.

I know it is a little way to drive but Vanderbilt has 24 urologic oncology doctors there and they are in the top 5 in the country for treating prostate cancer. My doctor Michael Cookson and radiologist Dr Shinohara are both excellent I have never had the level of treatment like I received there. Keep us posted on your treatment. WE CARE, Mark

Hey Rick, im Mark, you may want to check on having Brachytherapy, radioactive seeds put in the prostate. I have had it done on 5/31/13 and am getting a low dose of radiation from them over a 6 month period with just an outpatient procedure. Some slight side effects but nothing bad.if you need anything just ask, we are all here to support each other. im 58 this month so were not too different in age, also am from Madisonville ky and was treated at Vanderbilt

Rick- I had the same concerns about treatment,my urogogist recommended cyberknife and I set an appointment with the hospital that does that treatment. Its scary when you first drive up to the door and it says Radiation Onocology. I met with them and they gave me a physical and said I was a candidate for cyberknife. The worse part of this expierence was the biopsy I had done back in Feb. Cyberknife took only 5 sessions of 45 mins apiece with no restrictions,so I went to work after the treatments. The side effects only lasted a couple of weeks and they weren't that bad. I have good insurance and everything was covered.

Rick-I am also 60 and was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January. I had radiation therapy in March and I had a checkup last week and my PSA is heading in the right direction. My advice is to research all the options available to you.
