Hello, My husband is currently in the hospital for a partial obstruction and has an ileostomy bag. Going on his 6th day...lots of pain. Can you tell me how long it took to resolve yours in the past? Anything else you might have done that helped? Scared & frustrated wife.

I've written many poems. My mother influenced me by reading poems to me weekly when I was a child. She read from the old poets that usually rhymed instead of free verse. I knew Houseman, Poe, Browning, Longfellow, etc., before I was eleven. I love poetry, especially the lilt of the rhyme.

I wish you well. I hope nothing is malignant. I hate to see younger people getting cancer. I had small bowel cancer which didn't get detected until I was in 3rd stage cancer. Inoperable. Since I haven't gotten deathly ill, I stay in good spirits. Once in a while in the midnight hour I'll reminisce and feel bad. When I wake up I have a little prayer service then play my favorite church music on You Tube; which I've download to Real Cloud Player on my desktop. I play uplifting music and it gets me going in a positive mood. I bought an MP3 MP4 player and take the music to treatments. Again, my blessing to you.

How did the doctor's appointment go today? Hopefully, you got a lot of questions answered, insight to the course of action or at least the tests that need to be done to determine the course of action. Get ready for the fight!

Moondove...hang in there. You and your husband are going through a horrible time when you don't know much. I found that to be the worst. The uncertainty of what lies ahead is awful.

I didn't know exactly what stage I was until after the surgery. I went into surgery not knowing if I'd need a bag or chemo or radiation or even if I was going to be opened up all the way or done laparascopically. My surgeon said he couldn't determine any of that until he got in there and took a look. I was scared to death, but was determined and told my surgeon to do whatever he needed to do to get that bugger out of me. As my husband was driving me to the hospital that morning, I was texting all of my friends, "Bugger be gone...see you on the flip side." What was great about that was waking up and seeing all my friends' texts back to me.

Stage III is treatable and beatable. It's not easy, but I am now cancer-free, more than two years out.

Go into the doctor's appointments with a huge, organized list of questions, but let the doctor do the talking at first. If he's good, he'll cover everything with you from soup-to-nuts. The first oncologist we met with just took blood, told us which treatment, had us sit with his reiki specialist, took us into the treatment room and then told us to schedule my first treatment. I was very confused, uncomfortable, etc. So I kept looking and met with other doctors until I found the one who made us most comfortable, explaining every step, and made us feel like I was his only patient. The best decision we made.

I think it's great that the GI surgeon is including your husband's GP. I involved all of my doctors, asking for their professional advice. I talked with friends of friends who were in the field. Any professional advice I could get.
