    Hi littlelady,

Just wanted to reach out to say hi. I think we have some things in common. I am 42, was diagnosed 4/22, and I also had a double mastectomy on 5/22 (like mistyb). My surgery was outpatient so I am home resting and feeling good.

I also have a family history of breast cancer. My grandmother (who lived with us and was my 2nd mother) got it at 44, then had is appear on the other side at 80, which spread and she died one year later. Then my mother was diagnosed at 62, but it had already metastasized to her bones and I lost her 2 years ago.

I was actually in the process of pursuing elective double mastectomy surgery when I found my lump. So my decision to do both sides was easy. I hope you are happy with your decision.

Would love to hear how things are going for you since you are a few weeks ahead of me. Will you need chemo? Radiation?

I opted for a bilateral mastectomy with beginning reconstruction after the lumpectomy. I had ductal invasive carcinoma that was completely removed and the 3 lymph nodes were not affected. But the pathology report showed extensive DCIS which had not been detected on 4 mamos, 3 ultrasounds or the MRI. I could no longer trust future screenings. I'd be a nervous wreck the rest of my life. Of all the women I talked to, the ones who opted for bilateral were glad they did. The ones that had only one side done, all wished they had gone bilateral for different reasons (worry, breasts did not match, or cancer occurred later in the remaining breast).
You may not feel strong, but you're stronger than you think. Wishing you the best. Susan

I too was very scared about the surgery, you are not a baby. this is major surgery, but you will get through it. If you need to talk I am here to answer your questions if I can. Good luck!!!
