John; I too am a musician (bass and guitar) I used to sing quite a bit, but the surgery messed up my vocal chords and knocked my range down to 1 1/2 octaves instead of 3 I had. Anyway that being said, My major surgery was in June of 2010. My nasal feeding tube was in for about a month or so, and the trache, maybe 2 months or so. The trache was the hardest part of this and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but I guess its better than dying. Pain control is very important and I have found that the narcotics work best for me, as for oral surface pain, a mixture of lydocaine and mylanta (equal parts of each) in a spray bottle works great, it is sometimes called "magic mouth wash" and may contain Benedryl too, which is supposed to help with the swelling.. If you go to YouTube and type paxtonwexford in the search box you might find some songs that I and my band have recorded. May be some other stupid stuff on there as well, but it might make you laugh and that always helps in times like these. I wish you all the best, so fight the good fight my friend
