I hope I can help with your disability question. Is the disability for the state in which you live or is it SSDI? I am on SSDI because of my brain tumor but I do not have issues driving as you unfortunately do. The Social Security Administration has on their web site a list of conditions for which they must make a determination about benefits within 30 days. Brain tumors are on the list. I highly recommend applying for SSDI (you apply online) and they will obtain your medical records. I heard back 3 weeks after filling out the app and bringing the local SSA office my signed release form. I would also look into what state disabilityninsurance options are available to you. In California we have CASDI, which pays about 60% of your salary and lasts 12 months. You can receive SSDI and state disability at the same time, but SSDI will be at a reduced rate until the state benefits end. Then you'll get an increase.
I am going to retrain for different work than I had before, and our state Dept. of Rehabilitation will pay for training if there is a viable job market for your desired job. You might want to look into what your state offers as well. I hope this helps and that you are able to make a decision soon. Wishing you the best of luck.
