Do you remember the song from "The King and I" called "Whistle a Happy tune?" I think things sometimes work like that. Put on a brave front and you ARE brave. They say that bravery isn't being fearless. If you have no fears you can't be brave. Bravery is having fear and doing what needs to be done anyway.

And, I don't think it's selfish or foolish. In part, you make your own world. It's okay to cry. Sometimes you just need to. But others won't want to disturb or embarrass you. When you smile then others have a better time and that helps you see the bright side.

There will be good and bad times on your cancer journey. Try to see the humor in all of it. Laughter won't cure you, but it makes the journey more enjoyable.

    Dear April,

I hope the doctor gave you some better news than you've been getting. And, having your son there should be a help. There is never a good time to get this diagnosis, but the Holidays can be particularly difficult. I was diagnosed in December, 2010. And, certainly you can keep me up to date.
